The Catholic Church has canonized thousands of saints, with hundreds of blesseds and venerables in the mix too.
Out of all those saints and blesseds, there are a special few who want to be good friends with you.
This is one of the most unique and exciting aspects of Catholic life. The saints aren’t just people who lived and died a long time ago. They are real people who love us and support us right now with their prayers from Heaven.
So how do you sort through all the names and the stories to find those saints you can feel close to? Here’s some advice.
Start with your name.
Chances are you share the first name of a saint. If you do, read up on them. If your first name is uniquely your own, research the saint you chose as your Confirmation name. People often develop a strong devotion to their Confirmation saints as they learn more about them. You may be surprised at some of the stories you find!
Check in with the saint of the day.
The Catholic Church has set up an easy way to get to know the saints: the Church calendar. There’s a saint for every day of the year! Who’s the saint for the day you were born? Or baptized? Or got married? Use the “Lives of the Saints” book in your CatholicMonth.ly box to learn about each “saint of the day.” If you do this on a regular basis, you will quickly learn about some pretty amazing people in Catholic Church history.
What’s your occupation? There’s a saint for that.
There is a patron saint for everything. If you don’t believe us, just do a Google search for “patron saint of…” and someone will turn up. The saints are ready and eager to pray for us in all aspects of our lives, so praying to the patron saint of your occupation or state in life can lead to tremendous blessings.
And you don’t have to stop with your occupation. What are your interests and hobbies? You may not have thought about it, but the saints had interests and hobbies too. That’s how many of them become patron saints. Do you like to read, cook, surf the internet, play sports, go fishing, or learn about animals and insects? There’s a patron saint for every one of those things… and much, much more!
Above all, keep your eyes and ears open.
Think about how you met some of your closest friends. Maybe you met through a chance encounter, or maybe somebody introduced you to each other. It happens the same way with the saints. You never know when you’ll come across the story of a saint online, or hear someone else talk about a saint. If you feel interested in learning more about that particular saint, go for it! You never know how doing so will impact your life.
As with any friend, the more you talk to them, the closer you get. Pray to your patron saints often. They are your friends and companions in your journey through life. And they are always ready to help you with their prayers.
Have a blessed November with the saints, and see you next month.
